§ 48. FORMATION OF TENSES.

There are four primitive tenses from which the other tenses are formed; these are:

I. The Present of the Indicative, from which are derived: 1. The Imperfect Indicative, by changing _ons_ of the first person plural into _ais_, as: _parlons=parlais_; _finissons=finissais_, etc. 2. The Imperative, by suppressing the three personal pronouns of _je_ parle, _nous_ parlons, and _vous_ parlez, as: _parle_, _parlons_, _parlez_. The other two persons are merely parts of the Subjunctive Present used imperatively. 3. The Subjunctive Present, by taking off _nt_ of the third person plural and adding _que je_, as: _parlent=que je parle_. 4. The Present Participle, by changing _ons_ of the first person plural into _ant_, as: _parlons=parlant_; _finissons=finissant_.

II. From the Past Definite is formed the Subjunctive Imperfect, by adding _se_ to the second person singular, as: _parlas=parlasse_; _finis=finisse_; _reçus=reçusse_; _vendis=vendisse_.

III. From the Infinitive are formed the First Future and the Conditional Present, by adding in the First and Second Conjugation _ai_ and _ais_, and to the Third and Fourth by changing the endings _air_ and _re_ into _rai_ and _rais_, as: parler=parler_ai_, parler_ais_; finir=finir_ai_, finir_ais_; recev_oir_=recev_rai_, recev_rais_; vendre=vend_rai_, vend_rais_.

IV. With the aid of the auxiliaries _avoir_ and _être_, the Past Participle forms all other tenses, as: _j'ai parlé_; _j'avais fini_; _j'eus reçu_; _j'aurai vendu_; _je suis aimé_, etc.
