{Numbering:

The original text used six series of numbers:

_Book:_ Roman numeral in body text; +boldface+ Arabic numeral in Index. _Chapter:_ Roman numeral in body text; second Arabic numeral in Index. _Recipe:_ Boldface Arabic numeral in margin; third Arabic numeral (if present) in Index. The first recipe in a chapter is usually--but not always--given a number 1 in the body text. In this e-text, recipe numbers are placed inline.

_Schuch numbering:_ The continuous numbering, 1-478, from the 1874 Schuch edition was shown in parentheses in the margin. In this e-text, parenthetical numbers are placed inline.

_Page and line_ numbers are used in the critical apparatus and in the Addenda et Corrigenda. They are retained here for completeness, with the recipe number added in braces: 48, 11 {+6+ 9, 14}.

Lines in this e-text are numbered from 1 within each paragraph, with the apparatus changed accordingly. Line _breaks_ are as in the printed book. Internal references (lines within the same paragraph) have been changed to agree with this numbering; other line references are treated like page numbers, above.

All recipe citations, whether original or added by the transcriber, have been formatted to match the Index.}
