Il n'y a pas eu moins de 872 de ces réunions enthousiastes et respectueuses.

M. Taine a consacré à Burns un chapitre dans son _Histoire de la Littérature anglaise_.

M. André Theuriet a publié dans le _Parlement_ un joli article sur Robert Burns et Brizeux, plein du sentiment de la poésie rustique. Il a bien voulu nous en communiquer le manuscrit augmenté, nous l'en remercions ici, en regrettant qu'il n'ait pas reproduit ce travail dans son volume de _Sous Bois_.

Dans la _Nouvelle Revue_ (tome 56. Janvier-Février 1889) Mlle Marie-Anne de Bovet a publié un article sur Burns: _Un Barde moderne. Robert Burns._

Nous voudrions dire notre estime et notre respect pour la traduction des poésies de Burns par M. Léon de Wailly: C'est un travail sérieux et fait dans une excellente méthode de traduction. Il se trouve bien çà et là quelques erreurs, dues à une connaissance incomplète de quelques usages locaux écossais, à des allusions imparfaitement saisies. Ce sont de petites taches, presque inévitables dans une entreprise plus difficile lorsqu'elle fut faite (1843) qu'aujourd'hui, car les bonnes éditions de Burns sont récentes. Le véritable défaut de la traduction de M. de Wailly est peut-être dans un certain manque de couleur et de saveur. Les mots qui font saillie et brillent ne sont pas assez saisis et rendus; la traduction très fidèle est parfois un peu terne. Nous nous sommes imposé de ne pas ouvrir le livre de M. de Wailly pendant notre travail. Cependant son système de traduction est si exact qu'il arrive que sa traduction et la nôtre se juxtaposent. Nous désirons que le mérite de ces passages--où cette similitude nous rassure--revienne tout entier à notre prédécesseur.--La traduction de M. de Wailly, publiée par Charpentier en 1843, a été republiée par Delahays en 1857, dans la _Bibliothèque d'un Homme de goût_.
