Prynne in his _Sovereign Power of Parliament_ (1648), speaks of prisoners ‘allowed only a poor pittance of Adam’s ale.’ cf. Peter Pindar (John Wolcot), _The Lousiad_, Canto ii, ll. 453-4:—
