# The Purpose of the Papacy Author: Vaughan, John S. (John Stephen), 1853-1925 Genre: Category: History - Religious Language: English License: Public domain Source: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/16242 Amazon editions: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=The+Purpose+of+the+Papacy+Vaughan&tag=cyberlibrar00-20 ## Summary No one who is given to serious reflection, can gaze over the face of the earth at the present day without being struck by the religious confusion that everywhere reigns. Who, indeed, can help being staggered as well as saddened by the extraordinary differences, the irreconcilable views, and the diversities of opinion, even upon fundamental points, that are found dividing Christians in Protestant lands! The number of sects has so multiplied, that an earnest enquirer scarcely knows which way to turn, or where to look for the pure unadulterated truth. A spiritual darkness hangs over the non-Catholic world; and chaos seems to have come again. ## Chapters - [Chapter 6](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/6/index.md) - [Chapter 4](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/4/index.md) - [Chapter 12](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/12/index.md) - [Chapter 7](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/7/index.md) - [Chapter 3](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/3/index.md) - [Chapter 5](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/5/index.md) - [Chapter 11](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/11/index.md) - [Chapter 2](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/2/index.md) - [Chapter 10](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/10/index.md) - [Chapter 9](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/9/index.md) - [Chapter 8](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/8/index.md) - [Chapter 1](https://www.cyberlibrary.org/en/books/the-purpose-of-the-papacy-16242/chapters/1/index.md)
