Before the end of June, Yewridge Hall had been taken by the Marchmonts for a year, and they were established in it, not without considerable noise and bustle, pomp and circumstance, all of which arose from Marchmont’s rather than from his wife’s inclinations. His stinginess, once so notorious, had yielded, or had been forced by circumstances to yield--at any rate, in the matter of outside appearances.
