Part 6
Of all the critics of Mr. Dod's _Peerage, Baronetage, and Knightage of Great Britain and Ireland_, Mr. Dod is himself at once the most judicious and unsparing; and the consequence is, that every year he reproduces his admirable compendium with some additional feature of value and interest. For instance, in the volume for 1854, which has just been issued, we find, among many other improvements, that, at a very considerable cost, the attempt made in 1852 to ascertain and record the birthplace of every person who is the possessor, or the next heir, of any title of honour, has been renewed and extended with such success, that many hundred additional birthplaces are now recorded; and the unknown remnant has become unimportant. These statements are perfectly new and original, acquired from the highest sources in each individual case, and wholly unprecedented in the production of peerage-books.

A PRIEST. _We do not like to insert this inquiry without being able to give our readers a specific reference to some paper containing the advertisement; will he enable us to do so?_
A. B. (Glasgow). _This Correspondent appears to have fallen into an error; on reference he will find ether not washed is recommended _(Vol. vi., p. 277.)_; 2ndly, if he varnishes his pictures with amber varnish _(Vol. vii., p. 562.)_ previous to the application of the black varnish, which should be _black lacquer_ and not _Brunswick black_, then he will succeed. Courtesy demands a reply; but we must beg a more careful reading of our recommendations, which will save him much disappointment._

The Camden Society,
For the Publication of
EARLY HISTORICAL AND LITERARY REMAINS.
The Camden Society is instituted to perpetuate, and render accessible, whatever is valuable, but at present little known, amongst the materials for the Civil, Ecclesiastical, or Literary History of the United Kingdom; and it accomplishes that object by the publication of Historical Documents, Letters, Ancient Poems, and whatever else lies within the compass of its designs, in the most convenient form, and at the least possible expense consistent with the production of useful volumes.
The Subscription to the Society is 1l. per annum, which becomes due in advance on the first day of May in every year, and is received by MESSRS. NICHOLS, 25. PARLIAMENT STREET, or by the several LOCAL SECRETARIES. Members may compound for their future Annual Subscriptions, by the payment of 10l. over and above the Subscription for the current year. The compositions received have been funded in the Three per Cent. Consols to an amount exceeding 900l. No Books are delivered to a Member until his Subscription for the current year has been paid. New Members are admitted at the Meetings of the Council held on the First Wednesday in every month.
