VOLUME II.

Chapter 21,599 wordsPublic domain

P. 11. _Eg._ 339, 8: the date of Father Pagano’s letter to King Philip IV. must be wrong, for Prince Balthasar Carlos died at Saragossa in October 1646.

P. 24. _Eg._ 1826: between D. Melchor de Macanaz and el Conte de Oropesa a comma is to be inserted, as they were two different persons. Macanaz, the well-known writer on judicial and political matters, lived under Philip V., whereas the Count of Oropesa, whose name was D. Manuel Joachin Alvarez de Toledo y Portugal, had been years before, from 1684 to 1690, Prime Minister to Charles II., the last king of the house of Austria in Spain.

P. 82. _Add._ 9938, 6: in last line but one _haquella_ and _harmas_ are used, according to the singular spelling and pronunciation of the writer for “aquella” and “armas.”

P. 83. _Add._ 5470, 1 (l. 3): _bravos_ r. “brasos.”

P. 110. _Eg._ 501, 6 (l. 3): _Escolmo_ r. “Escolano.”

P. 118. _Eg._ 498, 8: y de las _Preces_ r. “pieças.”

P. 166. _Eg._ 361, 8: á la _interior_ r. “anterior.”

P. 173. _Add._ 11,618, 23: S^{t}. Xavier r. “S^{t}. Francis Xavier.”

P. 179. _Eg._ 453, 10: _impreso_ en Madrid r. “impresa.”

P. 186. _Add._ 9860, 1: reyno de _Fingo_ r. “Yungo.”

P. 202. _Eg._ 1507, 41: the Empress Maria, _widow of Ferdinand_, Emperor of Germany, r. “Maximilian II.,” who succeeded his father, Ferdinand II., in 1564, and died in 1576.

P. 203. ” ” 51: Letter of [D. _Diego_ Hurtado de Mendoza] marquis de Zenete, duke of Infantado, r. “Don Iñigo,” fourth marquis de Cenete or Zenete, and fifth duke del Infantado.

P. 204. _Eg._ 1508, 1: between Velarde de la Concha and D^{r} Antonio Morejon a comma should be inserted.

P. 245. _Add._ 16,176, 86: the date of the Emperor’s warrant must necessarily be a mistake, for Charles V. died at Yuste on the 21st of September, 1558, and D. Gaspar was not appointed archbishop of Seville till 1569, his predecessor Valdés having died in December 1568. The only way to reconcile the anachronism is to suppose that the writer or copyist omitted the words _Felipe II. hijo de_ Carlos V.

P. 247. ” ” 106: according to Ortiz de Zuñiga, _Anales de Sevilla_ (vol. iv. p. 55), D. Gaspar de Zuñiga, archbishop of that city, died at Jaen in 1571. He was on the road to Seville when he died; his body was taken thither and buried.

P. 254. ” ” 164 (l. 2): _Goncalo_ r. Gonçalo or Gonzalo.

P. 260. _Add._ 16,539, 114 (l. 2): _Mossen Senet_ seems to be a mistake for Mossen Benet.

P. 278. _Add._ 20,574, 110: Pablo de los _Fueros_ is probably a mistake for “Pablo de los Tueros,” though he is again mentioned in _Add._ 13,975, 21, p. 373, under the same appellation.

P. 284. _Add._ 10,262, 56: the letter is a duplicate of the one in _Eg._ 329, 24. It is here correctly addressed to Diego de Vera instead of Diego de _Velasco_, which is a mistake of the copyist for Captain Vera, the very man who in 1516 made an unsuccessful attack upon Algiers.

P. 289. _Add._ 25,682: T. G. Sparvenfeld was not _Imperial_ but Danish ambassador in Spain, having been sent thither by Christian V., who reigned from 1670 to 1699.

P. 308. _Add._ 13,964, 6 (l. 3): Antonio de _Herreras_ is a mistake for “Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas,” a celebrated Spanish historian of the beginning of the 17th century, whose various works are well known.

” ” ” 7: Alonso de _lo_ Mota is a misprint for “la Mota.”

P. 351. _Eg._ 322, 15: _Dingo_ Ossorio must be a mistake for Diego Ossorio, unless Dingo be meant for “Domingo.”

P. 362. _Add._ 13,974, 15 (l. 2): after _Santa Cruz_ add [_de_ la Sierra], a district and town of Peru.

P. 385. ” ” 16 (l. 5): Don _Diega_ r. “Don Diego.”

P. 392. _Add._ 14,012, 7 (l. 4): Philip III. between brackets is evidently a mistake; r. “Philip II.”

” ” ” 10: _Memoira_ r. “Memoria.”

P. 393. ” ” 11: Felipe III. r. “Felipe II.;” for although the report of the Council bears no date, it must have been addressed to the latter monarch, for Pope Sixtus V. filled St. Peter’s chair from 1585 to 1590.

He died on the 17th of August, 1600.
