After the death of her husband in 1554, Juana left Portugal and retired to Spain, where she died on the 7th of September, 1573. Juana was the mother of King Dom Sebastiaõ, born on the 20th of January, 1554, and slain at Alcasar Kebir in Africa, in August 1578. The Queen of Portugal alluded to in the passage was Catharine, the widow of Joaõ III., and grandmother of Dom Sebastiaõ, to whom the regency of the kingdom had been entrusted by her husband.

Two of them were viceroys of Naples: 1st, Don Pedro _Afan_ or Perafan de Ribera, first duke of Alcalá, from 1559 to 1571; 2ndly, Don Fernando _Afan_ Enriquez de Ribera, third duke, from 1629 to 1637. It is, therefore, quite evident that the duke there mentioned as having received a letter from Olivares could not be the _first_, but the _third_, who died in 1637.
